Dave's Gear Print E-mail

Welcome to my gear page.  I lead singing in worship, mainly using the guitar, and I have a small home studio.  So my gear reflects my main focus.  What I own is a balance or combination of value, need, want, cash flow, and my quest for quality sound on a budget.

  • For live vocals that cut through the mix, I use the ElectroVoice ND767A NDYM Super Cardioid Mic.
  • In the studio, I use a  Mac G4 dual processor (Silver)  and my sound card is a Digi 001 w/ Protools LE 6.4
  • I use a single channel Presonus Eureka Variable impedance mic pre.
  • For my condenser Mics, I use the Mojave Audio MA200 (through the Eureka Pre) and a MXL V67 Mogami.
  • I use JBL studio monitors and Samson power amps.
  • I also use a Monster Power PowerCenter PRO 2500 Rackmount Clean Power Stage 2, Surge Protection, and 10 Outlets.
  • I use a GNX4 for electric guitar processing.  On the plus side, I like the simplicity, portability and not having any stage volume from an amp.  On the minus side, I gave up some tone quality without an amp and other processors.  But for what I do it is a good solution.
  • Strings: On the Taylor 915 I use Elixer Nanoweb phosphor bronze medium.  The 915 has a jumbo body so the medium gage is recommended, and they sound great and are smooth playing.  And on the electric guitar, I use Ernie Ball Slinky regulars...relatively inexpensive and they sound well balanced.

Electric Guitar:

After doing some research online at www.edromanguitars.com, I made a trip to Las Vegas with my nephew and found this beauty among the thousands of guitars hanging on the walls.  It is a Quicksilver by Ed Roman, which is very well made, looks and sounds awesome, and has great sustain due to the designs implemented by Ed Roman.

Acoustic Guitar:

I have owned my Taylor 915 C with Fishman pickups since 2000 (made in 1999). It has a Jumbo body, no pickguard, a sharp edge on the cut away called the "Florentine" version, with pearl inlay on the neck called "Cindy", and around the sound hole and along the outer edge of the guitar.  I recorded the song "Interwoven" direct into a MD8 minidisc recorder on that song without using a condenser mic, and it still sounded great.

I use the K4 (pictured below) as a guitar preamp and EQ, which is a Rupert Neve design made by Taylor.  I find it to be an excellent solution live and in the studio to dial in the perfect sound.
